BiNem is a breakthrough technology that enhances existing LCD technologies by providing a memory effect and superior image quality. BiNem stands for Bistable Nematic.
- Bistable means that display content, such as images and text, is written, it remains diplayed without using any power supply due to the internal memory effect,
- Nematic means that it uses nematic liquid crystal materials which are standard, inexpensive and robust. Most LCDs use nematic materials.
Furthermore BiNem technology has a very high optical performance level: excellent contrast, very wide viewing angle, pure Black and White and a large number of colors, all of which can be processed on existing manufacturing lines with a very high quality to price ratio.
How BiNem® works

BiNem technology is based on a unique principle called “surface anchoring breaking” fully patented by Nemoptic. BiNem technology has two stable states, the Uniform (U) state and the Twisted (T) state, which are selected by applying simple pulses. Once either state is selected, it stays like it is forever without consuming any additional power.
The only way to go from one state to the other is to bring energy in the form of an electrical pulse. This pulse first lifts the molecules on the surface with the weak anchoring layer up to the point where the anchoring is broken. Then, depending on the shape of the falling edge of the pulse, the molecules organize either in U or T state.
Switching Mode: driven by Pulses

Steep falling edge -> Twisted State
A pulse with a steep falling edge favors the T texture because a liquid crystal backflow induced in the bulk of the liquid crystal layer strongly pushes the bottom molecule into the direction opposite to the upper one which results in a 180° twist.
Smooth falling edge -> Uniform state
An electric pulse with a smooth falling edge favors the U texture because the elastic relaxation is the dominant effect. All the molecules fall progressively from the transient state down to the uniform texture.
