Color e-paper display: new version
Tue, May 22, 2007
Nemoptic presents new version of its color e-paper displays at SID 2007

Nemoptic´s new color BiNem(R) displays offer higher resolution and improved brightness compared to competing color e-paper displays

Nemoptic will showcase its new color e-paper displays and other products at the Society for Information Display (SID) 2007 International Symposium, booth No. 1453

Magny les Hameaux, France - May 22, 2007 - Nemoptic, an e-paper display company for consumer and professional handheld devices, announced today that the company is launching a new version of color e-paper displays at the Society for Information Display (SID) 2007 International Symposium, May 20 - 25, in Long Beach, CA. Potential applications for color e-paper displays include electronic shelf labels, point of sale terminals, e-newspapers, e-magazines and electronic toys. E-paper display technology has all the attributes of paper but content can be displayed and erased electronically. Nemoptic expects the availability of its cost-effective color displays to help accelerate end-user adoption of e-paper display products.

The BiNem(R) Demonstrator (BD) 1000 uses a RGBW (Red-Green-Blue-White) color filter. Earlier prototypes of BiNem color e-paper displays were processed using basic RGB color filters, which lead to limited brightness at acceptable color saturation. As a result of switching to RGBW color filters, Nemoptic´s BD 1000 has improved brightness up to 20 per cent, among the highest for existing color e-paper displays, while maintaining the same color saturation level. Another important feature of BD 1000 is its fine subpixel size: 127 x 127 micrometers for each subpixel (Red, Green, Blue, or White), leading to a resolution of 100 dpi, considered high for bistable color displays. BD 1000 also offers 16 up to 1 million colors (16 colors corresponds to 2x2x2x2 in On/Off writing mode, and 32x32x32x32 corresponds to 1M colors in 32 grey scales mode). The active area of the color display measures 107.2 x 73.2 mm, resulting in a 129.8 mm or 5.1 inch diagonal for a 300x400xRGBW image.

"Nemoptic is preparing to address new high value-added e-paper applications, such as e-magazines, that will require color," said Jacques Noels, CEO at Nemoptic. "The emerging demand for e-paper products makes it all the more important to be able to mass-produce color displays, which we are aiming to achieve by year end."

BD 1000 is currently being produced on Nemoptic´s pilot line in Sweden, using standard production processes and industrial color filters. "We are using similar manufacturing processes for both black & white and color BiNem LCDs, which makes production very cost-effective," said Noels.

About Nemoptic
Nemoptic is an e-paper display company that designs and manufactures superior-quality bistable liquid crystal displays (LCD) highly suitable for consumer and professional mobile devices. Unlike other e-paper LCDs in the market, Nemoptic offers a white screen, giving users the best image contrast and a remarkable screen reading experience, comparable to ink on paper. The company´s cutting-edge technology, BiNem(R) (Bistable Nematic), has applications in a range of handheld devices, including educational e-books, e-dictionaries, e-newspapers, ultra mobile PCs, mobile phones, toys as well as electronic shelf labels. Nemoptic e-paper displays are recognized for their high resolution, zero-power consumption when holding images, fast-refreshing screens, and low-cost. They come in pure black and white and offer a large number of colors. Nemoptic leads in the development of bendable, full-color rendering e-paper displays.

Created in 1999, Nemoptic, headquartered near Paris, has raised more than EUR 35 million in private funding. It operates a production unit in Sweden and has a large-scale production facility agreement with Seiko Instruments Inc.
