Electronic Shelf Labels (ESL) are price tags that are equipped with wireless capabilities that simultaneously transmit pricing and promotional information throughout the supermarket.
BiNem-based ESLs have many distinctive advantages:
• excellent readibility, due to the best contrast in the market;
• machine-readable barcode capability, thereby reducing
labor cost and risks of errors;
• very low-consumption (over three years of autonomy), with
no display power required between updates;
• shorter Return On Investment (ROI) than existing solutions.
According to market data, in 2005, the total number of ESL labels was estimated at 53 million globally, installed in approximately 4,300 stores. The market has more than doubled in two years. Although penetration is still very low, and the total available market for ESL labels is evaluated at 6–10 billion units in the grocery sector alone*. The evolution of this market towards paperless displays opens great opportunities for dot-matrix bistable technologies, such as BiNem.
